CHICAGO—(ENEWSPF)–June 8, 2010. Yesterday Governor Pat Quinn urged the Unite States House of Representatives to include education jobs funding in upcoming supplemental spending legislation. The funding would allow school districts across the nation, including Illinois, to preserve teaching jobs and focus on reforms outlined by the federal Race to the Top program.
In a letter to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and members of Illinois’ congressional delegation, Governor Quinn noted that federal funding has helped preserve education funding in Illinois, despite the nation’s historic economic crisis.
“The State Fiscal Stabilization Fund arrived at a critical time for Illinois and helped us preserve thousands of jobs in our schools and universities. While signs of recovery are beginning to be seen across the country, there are still unprecedented funding challenges impacting nearly every classroom in America,” said Governor Quinn in the letter.
U.S. Rep. David Obey (D-Wis.), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, is leading the effort to include an Education Jobs Fund in the upcoming supplemental spending legislation. Action by the U.S. House on the spending legislation is expected in the coming weeks.
Governor Quinn urged the U.S. House to act quickly to save thousands of education jobs in Illinois.
“I am asking the House to carefully consider the impact on the education of our children if no further action is taken at the federal level to support our teachers and schools. Nothing is more critical than providing our children with a world-class education,” said Governor Quinn.
