University Park, IL–(ENEWSPF)– Governors State University is celebrating Black History Month throughout February with activities, entertainment, discussions, and music. The events are free and open to the public.
A discussion on “Hair – Myths, Realities, and Stereotypes” will take place on
Tuesday, February 9, from 6 to 7 p.m., in Engbretson Hall.
The GSU Expressions Lounge will be open on Wednesday, February 10 at 6 p.m. in Engbretson Hall. Entertainment will be provided by activist poet Righteous Knowledge and vocalist Al Mack, as well as “open mic” performances.
The 21st annual African American Read-In, which will take place at GSU on February 13, from 6 to 8 p.m., in Sherman Recital Hall. The Read-In, a national event, celebrates literacy as a significant part of Black History Month. Across the country, more than a million readers from all ethnic backgrounds will take part in the event.
Join the discussion about one of the seminal moments in American history, “Black Wall Street, Tulsa Riots” Tuesday, February 16, from 6 to 7 p.m. in room B1241.
Black History Month events continue with Movie Night, the screening and discussion of Bloody Island: The Race Riots of East St. Louis, a film about one of the worst incidents of labor-related violence and race riots in U.S. history. The screening and discussion are scheduled twice on Thursday, February 18, from noon to 1 p.m. and from 6 to 7 p.m., in room B1241.
A Health Awareness Information Fair will provide important information concerning mental health issues, breast cancer, STDs, high blood pressure, and AIDS/HIV on Monday, February 22, from noon to 6 p.m., in the Hall of Governors.
GSU will host an African Market with Afro centric products for sale on Tuesday, February 23, from noon to 6 p.m., in the Hall of Governors.
