Chicago Heights, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Marian Catholic senior Timothy LaVelle (Schererville, Ind.) has earned Semifinalist status in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. LaVelle also received a score of 36 on the ACT.
More than 1.5 million juniors in nearly 22,000 high schools entered the 2013 National Merit Program by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. More than 160,000 high school juniors from all parts of the United States requested consideration. Semifinalists are designated within geographic regions and are the highest-scoring program entrants in the states that make up each region.
LaVelle will be among the semifinalists numbering 16,000 nationally who now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 8,300 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $32 million, that will be offered next spring. To become a Finalist, students must have an academic record of very high performance, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the students earlier qualifying test performance.
Additionally, Edith Boiquaye (Schererville, Ind.), Patrick Fagan (Chicago Heights, Ill.), John Kirschenheiter (Flossmoor, Ill.), and Christopher Merriman (New Lenox, Ill.) earned status as a Commended Student (top 50,000 in the nation) in the National Merit Program.
Edith Boiquaye (Schererville, Ind.), Taylor Byas (Olympia Fields, Ill.), Aaron Hudson (South Holland, Ill.), Cameron Lewis (Olympia Fields, Ill.), and Fauve Liggans-Hubbard (Matteson, Ill.) earned recognition as Semifinalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Competition. They rank among more than 1,600 high school seniors named Semifinalists in the 49th annual program, a competition for Black American High School Students.
Seven Marian Catholic High School seniors are among 3,000 National Achievement Scholarship Program Commended Students for U.S. Colleges and Universities. Marian commended students include Ola Olu Michael Agbabiaka (Crete, Ill.), Brianna Banks (Richton Park, Ill.), Rosalind Byrd (Crestwood, Ill.), Kareem Johnson (South Holland, Ill.), Ryan Paige (Park Forest, Ill.), Ronay Thomas (Country Club Hills, Ill.), and Bailey Williams (Hazel Crest, Ill.)
