Marian Catholic’s Joey Cifelli Smashes 39-year-old IHSA State Record To Seize Second Consecutive Diving Championship (Video)

Chicago Heights, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Marian Catholic High School senior Joey Cifelli smashed a 39-year-old state record to win his second consecutive IHSA state title in men’s diving.

From swimswam.com:

"ONE METER DIVING: Marian Catholic senior Joey Cifelli, with a score of 555.40, destroyed the state mark of 537.72 set all the way back in 1976 by Hinsdale Central’s Dave Boldebuck. Cifelli, who won last year’s diving with a score of 474.05, won the event by almost 80 points."

According to Sean Scanlon, Marian Catholic’s swimming coach, who accompanied Cifelli, "Joey won the State diving championship with 555.40 points. He beat the old state record of 537 points. In typical Joey fashion; he dedicated his performance Saturday to the memory of Diane Carlson, his club coach’s wife, who recently passed away from leukemia. I could not be prouder of how Joey represents Marian Catholic all the time. It’s been an honor to be with him as his ‘coach’ for 4 years."
