University Park, IL–(ENEWSPF)– Pack your overnight bag for 2010 Autumn Art Odyssey, an unforgettable trip to some of the Midwest’s greatest art and architectural treasures. The Art Odyssey, sponsored by the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park (NMSP) at Governors State University, takes place September 9 and 10.
During the two-day Art Odyssey, participants will examine the relationship between art and architecture as they visit two Frank Lloyd Wright masterworks in southern Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the Lynden Sculptural Park.
This year’s Art Odyssey includes:
- Self-guided tours of Wingspread, the Johnson family home, and the revolutionary S.C. Johnson Building in Racine, Wisconsin. Both were designed by Wright at the height of his creative powers.
- The Quadracci Pavilion of the Milwaukee Art Museum, with fluid interior and exterior spaces and the magnificent moving wing shade designed by contemporary architect Santiago Calatrava.
- The Milwaukee Art Museum main building, designed by Eero Saarinen. The museum’s sculpture collection has pieces from the Roman period to the modern era, including work by NMSP sculptor Martin Puryear.
- The recently reopened Lynden Sculpture Park, also in Milwaukee, with its collection of more than 50 monumental sculptures sited across 40 acres of park, lake, and woodland.
- Overnight lodging at Milwaukee’s historic Pfister Hotel, recognized throughout the Midwest for its luxury accommodations and excellent service.
During the Art Odyssey, Dr. Nina Corazzo, NMSP board member and Professor of Art History at Valparaiso University, will provide commentary at several sites. NMSP Director Geoff Bates will deliver an expert commentary on the relationship between art and sculpture.
Art Odyssey will depart by coach bus from Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park at 7:45 a.m. Friday, September 9; the early hour reflects the closing times of both Wingspread and the S.C. Johnson Building. The coach bus returns to NMSP late Saturday afternoon.
Cost of the 2010 Autumn Art Odyssey is $295, which represents actual expenses for the two-day excursion. Box lunches will be provided on the first day of the trip but participants should be prepared to pay for subsequent meals. Interested persons must submit a $100 deposit by Wednesday, August 11.
