Chicago Heights, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Prairie State College (PSC) recently recognized the 2012-2013 Bloom High School National Honor Society student members with the 2013 Michael R. Monteleone Community Service Award. The award was presented at the August meeting of the PSC Board of Trustees.

The award is given annually to a community member or members in the PSC district who have contributed in an extraordinary way to education through community service as either a volunteer or a community leader.

The group was honored for several activities, including volunteering at the Brookwood Junior High’s Book Fair, the Touch of Warmth Project with Marilyn Bricks at Marian Catholic High School, the Feel the Warmth Project with Edie Dobrez at Homewood Flossmoor High School, the Respond Now Toy Drive, the Lion’s Club Candy Drive, and the Ronald McDonald House Christmas Wish List in Oak Lawn. They also volunteered their time by cleaning local parks with Ald. Josh Deabel and Ald. Sylvia Torres, hosting two holiday Family Reading Nights at the Bloom High School Steckel Library, hosting Bloom High School Honors Brunch, and working at the Jones Community Center. The group also turned the annual quiet walk-a-thon into a 5K Run/ Walk honoring two students killed in 1996, that raised more than $6000.

“I sleep easy knowing the goodness and kindness in our students’ hearts” said Elizabeth J. Fushi-Peterson, the NHS advisor, who nominated the group for the award. “I truly believe these young people will be lifelong community volunteers and advocates wherever they should live.”
