Chicago Heights, IL–(ENEWSPF)– Opening ceremonies that included the lighting of the Olympic torch kicked off Park Forest-Chicago Heights School District 163’s Beacon Hill Primary Center’s Reading Olympics.
To connect reading with the real world and with the current events, Beacon Hill tied its 2010 reading challenge, Read Like A Champion, into the Winter Olympics. Torchbearers ran through the school announcing the challenge, students marched into the gymnasium with standard bearers displaying reading strategies and third grade student Autumn Blackmon lit the Olympic torch to signify the beginning of Read Like A Champion.
Encouraged to read at lease 60 minutes a night, the students are challenged to read 75,000 minutes to earn a bronze medal, 150,000 minutes to earn a silver medal and 225,000 minutes to earn a gold medal. A school celebration will follow the winning of each medal. An Olympics Day is planned for the final celebration of Read Like A Champion.
