CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–October 29, 2015. Roosevelt University will host the opening of Mostra VI: Brazilian Film Series, a 17-day event that screens some of the best in new Brazilian films that have strong social themes in venues around the Midwest.
The festival’s opening night gala and the premiere of Getúlio, a film about the political crisis that led to the suicide of the country’s longest serving president (pictured above) in 1954, will be held beginning with a 5:30 p.m. reception in Roosevelt’s 4th Floor Wabash Building, 425 S. Wabash Ave., Chicago.
Filmmaker and documentarian João Jardim (at right), director of Getúlio, is expected to attend the opening night festivities and premiere of his fiction movie exploring the last 19 days of the life of Brazilian President Getúlio Vargas. Lead actor Tony Ramos received a Best Actor award from the Brazilian Academy of Cinema for the film that will be screened beginning at 6:45 p.m.
“This event should spark the interest of anyone who is interested in Latin America and the region’s incredibly cinematic culture,” said Carmen Kordick, an assistant professor of history and scholar of Latin American history at Roosevelt.
Sponsored by Roosevelt’s Center for New Deal Studies and the Department of History and Philosophy, this kickoff event for the Brazilian Film Series is expected to include appearances by a number of Brazilian directors, producers and actors.
