Senators Kirk, Durbin Statement on Opening of Public Charter School in North Chicago

NORTH CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–August 31, 2012.  Today U.S. Senators Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) released the following statement in support for the opening of the LEARN Public Charter School in North Chicago at Great Lakes Naval Station:

“We congratulate the newest LEARN public charter school on its opening day and commend the Illinois State Board of Education, the community of North Chicago and the U.S. Navy for their efforts in working together to establish this school,” the Senators said. “LEARN has a record of success in teaching and we are confident that LEARN North Chicago will enhance the quality of education in the area and benefit students and their families in this community, which includes many members of the military.”

The elementary charter school is scheduled to open on September 4, 2012 in North Chicago School District 187.  In June, the LEARN Charter School Network signed a lease with the Navy to the open its newest school at the former Great Lakes Naval Station training facility.  LEARN also held a lottery for all applicants to determine enrollment. The school is estimated to house 250 students grades K-2nd and 6th-7th for the initial 2012-2013 school year. LEARN North Chicago aims to grow by one grade each year to eventually serve grades K-8 and 500 students.  The LEARN network has six campuses in the Chicagoland area total, and LEARN North Chicago is the first in the network to open outside the city of Chicago limits.
