Chicago Heights, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Sister Mary Jo Sobieck, O.P., the Dominican Sister from Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights is getting her own bobblehead. After her incredible curveball opening pitch Saturday evening at Guaranteed Rate Field, Sr. Mary Jo has appeared on Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, WGN in Chicago, local stations across the United States, and international news stations.
Tomorrow, she is scheduled to appear on Fox and Friends in New York. The show reportedly flew her to the Big Apple this evening for a Tuesday morning in-studio appearance tentatively scheduled for 8:15 AM CDT.
Through it all, she has maintained her focus, speaking highly of Marian Catholic in Chicago Heights. In response to the first question she received from Good Morning America host Michael Strahan, she managed to mention “Marian Catholic” twice in the same sentence, “Marian Catholic had a Marian Catholic night with the White Sox, a promotional game. It’s the 60th Anniversary of our school. Our sisters founded the school in 1958. So, to celebrate that, the administration asked me to throw out the pitch as one of the sisters who are still here, sixty years after that founding.
George Stephanopoulos asked her, “Now, there must have been a reason they chose you.”
Sr. Mary Jo’s appearance on Fox and Friends:
“Well, George,” Sister Mary Jo calmly replied, “I think it’s probably because I have a little bit of athletic ability.” Stephanopolous laughed out loud when she said, “Well, George,” as if she’d been doing national television interviews her entire life.
“I was probably the most likely candidate, because of my youth and my agility,” sister continued.
Sarah Haines asked sister why she threw from the mound, “I was so impressed with you, sister, because you threw it from the mound, and a lot of people who throw that ceremonial first pitch, they cheat and they don’t throw it from the mound. But why did you decide to step on the mound and the rubber and throw from there?”
And here, knowing Sister Mary Jo, who has been my “next door neighbor” since she arrived at Marian Catholic, teaching in the room next to mine, gave an answer that, I believe, sums up so much of her personal philosophy, her values, when it comes to education, Marian Catholic, which she exhibits, makes evident, as she reaches out to every student, every day.
“Well, as an athlete, you got to be ‘all in.’ And I knew that my coaches and my teammates when they saw that would be like, ‘What are you doing? Wimping-out, man!’ You gotta do the real thing. It’s all or nothing. So, I had to do it from the top.”
Sr. Mary Jo, and Marian Catholic, “all in” for every student, every day.
