Philion

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–October 21, 2014.  Thomas Philion has been appointed dean of Roosevelt University’s College of Education.

An accomplished scholar, professor and academic leader, Philion, 52, joined Roosevelt in 1999 and has been interim dean of the College of Education since July 2013.

“Tom Philion is a thoughtful and strategic leader who has skillfully directed the College during a period of great change in education on the local, state and national levels,” said Roosevelt University President Chuck Middleton, who announced the appointment on Oct. 16. “His collegial management style and deep commitment to teacher preparation are major reasons he has been unanimously recommended for the Dean’s position.”

Philion has been presiding over redesign of the College of Education’s Elementary Education program in a project made possible by a $100,000 grant from Chicago Community Trust. Under his leadership, the College’s School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs have been accredited, the Reading, Early Childhood and Secondary English, Math, History and Science programs have earned national recognition and the College’s 2014-2020 Vision and Strategic Plan has been approved by the Roosevelt faculty.

“I am humbled to serve as dean of the College of Education,” said Philion. “My experiences this past year working with my colleagues in Education and key stakeholders across the University and in the Chicago area have been transformational.  We have a lot of work to do to meet new demands and expectations, but I am eager for the opportunity and look forward to the journey that we will take together.”

The author of more than 15 articles and reports on teacher research, portfolio pedagogy, oral and written storytelling, collaborative learning and computer mediated instruction, as well as other topics, Philion has a goal as dean of continuing to innovate, grow and strengthen partnerships with schools in the city of Chicago and its suburbs.
