Prairie State College (PSC) recent graduates Anthony Dickerson of Matteson and Omar Martinez of Homewood were named to the 2018 Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-Illinois Academic Team. In addition to being recognized for the honor in Springfield in April, Dickerson and Martinez were recognized for their achievements during a recent PSC Board of Trustees meeting and the 59th Annual Commencement Ceremony at the college last month.
Dickerson is a member of the Nu Sigma Chapter of PTK, and served as president of the Student Government Association, and a member of the Male Success Initiative, Political Science club, Model Illinois Government, Black Student Union, and All Latin Alliance. As president of the Student Government Association, Dickerson represented student interests in the monthly meetings of the Board of Trustees and College Council. Among his volunteer efforts, Dickerson has volunteered for the Illinois’ governor’s race and attorney general election, and has participated in the clerkship program with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. He plans to attend Loyola University Chicago, with a scholarship to study social science. He hopes to enroll in law school after completing his bachelor’s degree.
Martinez is a member of the Nu Sigma Chapter of PTK, and served as president of the All Latin Alliance, and a member of Psi Beta and TRiO Student Support Services. He has been involved in a number of volunteer activities with All Latin Alliance, including several fundraising initiatives in cooperation with the PSC Foundation, a “Know Your Rights” event, the Halloween Fun Fest for the community, and assisting when the Mexican Consulate set up on the PSC campus to assist community members. Among his academic achievements, Martinez recently was awarded the 2018 Dr. Juan Andrade Scholarship for Young Hispanic Leaders, as well as numerous other scholarship awards. In the past two years, he has received the Board of Trustees Scholarship and a scholarship award from Phi Theta Kappa. As a student in the Dual Degree Program with Governors State University (GSU), Martinez also recently was named a recipient of the Promise Scholarship, an award that covers the full cost of tuition and fees at GSU, where he plans to attend in the fall to complete a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, with a minor in accounting.
The All-Illinois Academic Team recognizes high achieving two-year college students from the state of Illinois who demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor combined with leadership and service that extends their education beyond the classroom to benefit society. Students must have maintained a 3.50 or higher GPA to be considered for this honor.
“We are very proud of everything these two students accomplished during their time at Prairie State College,” said PSC President Dr. Terri L. Winfree. “I know that both Anthony and Omar will achieve great things as they continue their college studies, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for them.”
