Granite City Man Sentenced in Child Pornography Case


Springfield, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Stephen R. Wigginton, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, announced today that on October 14, 2010, DAVID STEWARD, age 36, of Granite City, Illinois, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis, to 70 months’ imprisonment, and a fine of $750 to be followed by a lifetime term of supervised release. In addition, the Court imposed a $100 special assessment.

STEWARD had previously pled guilty on February 11, 2010, to an indictment that charged him with transportation of child pornography. According to the stipulation of facts filed with the court at the time of the plea, the offense occurred in 2008 and approximately 57 images of child pornography were located on STEWARDS’s computer in April 2009.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. The investigation in this case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigations Cybercrimes Task Force. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Nicole E. Gorovsky.
