Police: Homewood Man Gets DUI When Found Asleep Behind the Wheel


Park Forest, IL–(ENEWSPF)– Police were dispatched to the intersection of Lakewood Boulevard and Westwood Drive on August 1 at 4:32 a.m. to investigate a complaint of a subject asleep behind the wheel of his vehicle while it was stopped at a stop sign. When police arrived, they observed the vehicle at the stop sign with the driver slumped over to the side of the steering wheel unconscious.

Officers knocked on the windows and doors of the vehicle in an attempt to wake the driver with negative results. As officers were attempting to make contact with the driver by knocking on the windows, the vehicle was set into motion from the stop sign at the intersection while the driver was still unconscious. The vehicle traveled eastbound on Lakewood Boulevard, traveling off the road into the front yard parkway of a residence in the 400 block of Lakewood Boulevard, running over several shrubs until it finally stopped after it struck a tree.

The officers followed the vehicle while activating their emergency lights and sirens with no response. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers observed that the driver was still unconscious and had not yet opened his eyes. The officers continued knocking on the windows. Police then forced entry to the rear driver’s side window and the driver was removed from the vehicle by the officers.

Police say the driver, Jwuan Andrews-Hendricks, 25, 19151 Pierce Ct., Homewood, allegedly stated that he was sorry and that he “knows he screwed up.” He further allegedly stated that he thought he was in Homewood near his house, according to police

Police say the driver was asked and voluntarily agreed to take a breath test, yielding a blood alcohol level of .138, according to police.

Andrews-Hendricks was arrested on August 1 and charged with driving while under the influence and issued citations charging improper stopping/standing in a roadway, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving with no insurance, driving under the influence, breath-alcohol concentration greater than .08 BAC, and open liquor in a vehicle.
