Champaign County Man Sentenced on Theft Conviction

Springfield—(ENEWSPF)—October 31, 2013. Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced a Champaign man was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty late yesterday to stealing assets reserved for his disabled mother’s care.

Champaign County Judge Heidi Ladd sentenced Daryl E. Wrona, 47, of Urbana, to the Illinois Department of Corrections for theft, a Class 1 felony. An Illinois State Police Medicaid Fraud Unit and Champaign Police Department investigation revealed that Wrona took more than $100,000 of his mother’s private funds for his personal use during a three-year period when he served as her court-appointed guardian. Judge Ladd also sentenced Wrona to two years of Mandatory Supervised Release and to pay restitution of nearly $107,000.

“The defendant took advantage of his ailing mother for years,” Madigan said. “A significant prison sentence is very fitting for his inexcusable conduct.”

Deputy Bureau Chief and Assistant Attorney General Stephen Swofford of Madigan’s Medicaid Fraud Control Bureau handled the case upon referral from the investigative agencies.

Madigan said individuals are encouraged to call the Illinois State Police Medicaid Fraud Hotline at (888) 557-9503 to report suspected fraud in the Medicaid system.
