Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–December 8, 2015. Today, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced major changes to the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) – also known as the five-star safety ratings system – set to debut in 2018. The updated analysis will include consideration of pedestrian and rear-seat passenger safety. Rep. Schakowsky released the following statement in response:
“I am pleased to learn that beginning in 2018, NHTSA will take into account several new factors when determining safety ratings. Especially important to me is the consideration of pedestrian and rear passenger safety. My auto safety legislation, the Vehicle Safety Improvement Act, would enhance pedestrian safety and rear seat crashworthiness through NHTSA rulemakings. While the changes to the NCAP ratings will not require those enhancements, they will certainly incentivize them. I will continue to work with my colleagues, NHTSA, auto safety advocates, and the public to make our cars and our roads even safer.”
