ISAF Joint Command Morning Operational Update, November 12, 2012


KABUL, Afghanistan–(ENEWSPF)–November 12, 2012  — An Afghan-led security force, supported by coalition troops, arrested a Taliban leader in Kandahar province today. 

The arrested leader commanded an improvised explosive device attack cell in central Kandahar province that provided subordinate insurgent fighters with IED materials, weapons and ammunition.

During the operation, the security force also detained a number of suspected insurgents.

North

Afghan and coalition forces confirmed today the arrest of a Taliban IED facilitator and suicide operations coordinator in Kunduz province Saturday. The arrested IED facilitator is believed to be planning a magnetic-IED attack against Afghan and coalition forces. The security force also detained one suspected insurgent.

South

Afghan and coalition forces seized a cache of 2,290 kilograms (5,048 pounds) of dry opium, 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of brown heroin and 550 liters of Acetic Anhydride used in the manufacturing of heroin worth more than $725,000 following an operation along the Helmand River in Helmand province yesterday. Insurgents attempted to hide two vehicles loaded with the cache in the vegetation along the river bank. In the past three days Afghan security forces have seized narcotics and chemicals valued at more than one million dollars in southern Helmand province alone. All seized items were destroyed.        

Afghan and coalition forces confirmed today the arrest of a mid-level insurgent leader, who was arrested Nov. 5 in Uruzgan province. Akhund is suspected of leading attacks on Afghan National Police checkpoints.

An Afghan and coalition force detained several suspected insurgents during a security operation in search of a Taliban leader in Helmand province today. The Taliban leader is a weapons distributer supporting the insurgency.

East

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani leader during an operation in Paktiya province today. The arrested leader is suspected of being responsible for transferring weapons and IEDs into central Paktiya province. The security force also detained one suspected insurgent and seized an assault-style rifle as a result of the operation. 

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani leader during an operation in Logar province today. The arrested leader is alleged to be responsible for facilitating weapons and directing attacks against Afghan and coalition forces within central and northern Logar province. The security force also detained two suspected insurgents and seized a rifle as a result of the operation.
