WASHINGTON–(ENEWSPF)–September 12, 2012. Statement by Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, on the settlement of the Boston Teachers Union contract today.
“The tentative agreement between the Boston Teachers Union and the Boston school district is a model of what’s possible when all parties decide to do what’s best for kids, teachers, schools and community. Collaboration isn’t easy and trust doesn’t happen overnight, but they are key for resolving differences and paving the way for a lasting labor-management partnership. Boston negotiators agreed to reducing class sizes, increasing the number of nurses and social workers, an agreement on teacher evaluation and expanding the role and function of parents. These reforms help improve learning and teaching conditions while addressing underlying problems that affect student achievement.
“The Boston Teachers Union and its management partners should be commended for working collaboratively to reach a tentative agreement that is good for students, affordable to the city and fair to teachers.”
