Community Activists to Meet with Wells Fargo Executive to Demand Corporate Responsibility

Des Moines, Iowa—(ENEWSPF)—March 29, 2012.  Attendees representing the 99% movement will ask Wells Fargo to stop practices that hurt our families and communities.

What:    Meeting between Wells Fargo executive Jon Campbell and representatives of National People’s Action (NPA) affiliates Iowa CCI, Take Action Minnesota, Sunflower Community Action, Rights for All People, and Illinois People’s Action, as well as SEIU, Enlace International, Alliance for a Just Society, The New Bottom Line, PICO and CISSCO.

When:  Monday, April 2, 2012

Where: Des Moines, Iowa

Who:     Community activists representing the 99% Movement

Why:     Foreclosures, private prisons, payday lending, unlimited corporate money in politics and corporate exploitation of our tax system are hurting our families and communities.  The flight to regain control of our economy, government and communities’ well-being begins Monday, April 2 in Des Moines, Iowa when community activists meet with a Wells Fargo executive and start demanding corporate accountability.

This meeting is happening because NPA affiliate Iowa CCI dropped off a letter to Wells Fargo in early February letting them know we were going to their shareholder meeting in April to demand change.  Wells Fargo reacted by agreeing to meet with us.  We will present five demands to Wells Fargo’s Jon Campbell.  We want Wells Fargo to:

  1. 1.Stop foreclosures;
  2. 2.Stop investing in the private prison industry;
  3. 3.Stop offering predatory direct deposit payday loans and stop financing the payday lending industry;
  4. 4.Get its money out of politics; and
  5. 5.Pay its fair share of taxes.

Monday’s meeting represents just the beginning in the movement to make corporations that profit from the 99% to be more accountable and responsive to the 99%.  In the next 6 weeks, thousands of people will engage in mobilizations and non-violent direct action leading up to and at the shareholder meetings of dozens of corporations, including the Wells Fargo shareholder meeting in San Francisco on April 24, to ensure that what emerges from our current economic crisis is an economy that truly works for all of us.
