Democratic lawmakers held a rally on the steps of the Supreme Court this evening to condemn Trump’s anti-immigrant, anti-refugee executive order; included were House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi:

“What the president did is not constitutional, and in the view of many of us is immoral. … What the president has done is not in the interest of security. It is reckless and rash to protect our constitution and our people we must be strong and smart.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer:

This order is against what we believe in this America. The order will make us unsafe. The order will make us inhuman and the order will make us less of America. … It is against what America is all about. … We will fight it with everything we have and we will win this fight.

Rep. Jerry Nadler:

“When he signed his stupid executive order Friday afternoon. It was — I did not know people would join together to fight this outrageous policy and help those in need. That gives me hope we can overcome this dark time. We must overcome this dark time. We must overcome this little man in the white house disgracing our history and disgracing our tradition.”

The next step: Democratic lawmakers must, to a person, work to defeat Trump’s order not merely in speeches but in the House and Senate. Reject the Jeff Sessions nomination—Sessions must not be allowed the opportunity to enforce Trump’s anti-American stances. Reject the rest of Trump’s nominees. Refuse to work with Trump in any capacity, on anything, so long as Trump attempts to govern as a white nationalist leader, instead of an American leader.

If opposition to Trump does not make it into House and Senate votes, it’s meaningless.
