Readout of Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel’s Call with Israeli Minister of Defense Moshe Ya’alon, December 16, 2013

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–December 16, 2013.

Assistant Press Secretary Carl Woog provided the following readout:

Secretary Hagel called Israeli Minister of Defense Moshe Ya’alon today to continue their close consultations on shared regional security challenges and the strong defense cooperation between the United States and Israel.  During the call, they discussed Secretary Hagel’s recent trip to the Gulf and his remarks at the Manama Dialogue.

Secretary Hagel underscored the United States’ commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. They also discussed the situation in Syria, including the international community’s efforts to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons program. Secretary Hagel and Minister Ya’alon pledged to continue to stay in close touch on these and other priority regional issues, and reaffirmed the unprecedented strength of the U.S.-Israel defense relationship.

Today’s phone call followed the fourth meeting between Secretary Hagel and Minister Ya’alon this year, which took place at the Halifax International Security Forum last month in Canada.
