Report on Deputy Secretary of Defense Carter’s Visit to South Korea


Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–March 18, 2013.  Pentagon Press Secretary George Little provided the following readout: 

“U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Ash Carter visited the Republic of Korea March 18.  During his visit, Deputy Secretary Carter met with senior U.S. and ROK officials.  In each meeting, he reconfirmed the steadfast commitment to the alliance. 

“Deputy Secretary Carter started his visit with a meeting with U.S. Forces Korea commander Gen. James D. Thurman.  Following this, he met with U.S. Ambassador Sung Kim.  Carter then visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and met with Minister Yun, Byung-se.  Carter traveled to the Blue House and met with Kim, Jang-Soo at the National Security Office.  Carter’s final meeting was with Minister of National Defense Kim, Kwan Jin.  

“After meeting the press at the U.S. embassy, Carter toured Command Post Tango and observed the ongoing the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle exercises and thanked U.S and South Korean troops for their service. 

“During his meetings with South Korean officials, Deputy Secretary Carter and the ROK leaders discussed issues of mutual importance to the alliance, including the threat posed by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.  Additional topics included adding military capabilities to the alliance, extended deterrence and the continuing U.S. commitment to the resource the Asia-Pacific rebalance including U.S. presence on the Korean Peninsula. 

“Deputy Secretary Carter and his Republic of Korea counterparts pledged close and continuing cooperation on these issues at senior levels of government.”
