In Retaliation Against Trump’s Refugee and Travel Ban, Tehran Bans Travel to Iran by U.S. Citizens

Will Iran’s ban of U.S. citizens’ travel to Iran in response to Trump immigration ban cause problems for inspecting the nation’s compliance with the nuclear agreement?

Iran is one of the seven Muslim-majority nations included in Pr*sident Trump’s restrictions on refugees, green card holders and visa holders. Tehran’s leaders have decided to retaliate, according to CNN’s Ralph Ellis:

Iran says it will ban all US citizens from entering the country in response to President Donald Trump’s executive order limiting immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries, according to an Iranian Foreign Ministry statement published on state media Saturday. […]

“The US decision to restrict travel for Muslims to the US, even if for a temporary period of three months, is an obvious insult to the Islamic world and in particular to the great nation of Iran,” the statement said.

“Despite the claims of combating terrorism and keeping American people safe, it will be recorded in history as a big gift to extremists and their supporters.”

Presumably, that means any U.S. citizens who work as inspectors for the International Atomic Energy Agency, would be barred. Among the IAEA’s tasks are verifying compliance with the Iran nuclear agreement. Since the Trump regime is no friend of that agreement, it’s hard to tell whether the White House will see Iran’s ban as a bad or a good thing.
