Secretary General Ban Strongly Condemns Attack on Residence of Guinea’s President

NEW YORK–(ENEWSPF)–19 July 2011.

President Alpha Condé of Guinea

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned the attack today on the residence of the President of Guinea, and called on all citizens to refrain from acts that will undermine the democratic process taking place in the West African nation.

Alpha Condé is reported to be safe after the early morning attack on his home in the capital, Conakry.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mr. Ban stressed that no disagreements or differences justify recourse to violence in a democracy.

“He calls on all Guineans to refrain from all acts likely to undermine the ongoing peaceful and democratic process in the country,” the statement said.

Mr. Condé took office after he won last November’s run-off presidential election, the final stage of the interim Government’s efforts to restore democracy after Captain Moussa Dadis Camara seized power in a coup in 2008 following the death of long-time president Lansana Conté.
