Government Transformation Act Could Save Taxpayers Millions
WASHINGTON –(ENEWSPF)–November 17, 2015. U.S. Senators Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) today announced the introduction of S.2269, the Government Transformation Act, a bill which creates an independent commission to target government waste and inefficiency. The bill would also provide actionable recommendations to Congress in order to enhance government effectiveness, efficiency and credibility in government programs.
“By eliminating outdated and underutilized programs like agencies and offices that print documents already found online, we can save taxpayers millions,” Senator Kirk said. “This bipartisan bill is a step towards reducing government waste and inefficiency.”
The legislation:
- Creates an independent, seven member, government transformation commission tasked with finding taxpayer savings and government waste.
- The independent analysis will include program evaluation, effectiveness, efficiency, consolidation, reform and best practices. Similar to the Grace Commission that was set up under President Reagan to find inefficiencies in government, and the Simpson-Bowles Commission, which focused on reducing the national debt, this Commission will provide the President and Congress with ways to fix Washington.
- In addition to this legislation, Senator Kirk is the co-author of S.1636, the Just Google It Act, which would eliminate the National Technical Information Service (NTIS), which prints and sells copies of government documents that can already be found online. It’s estimated that this fiscal year the operating cost of the NTIS is $170 million. He also spearheaded an effort to include an amendment in the FY16 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Committee manager’s package, that would reduce printing costs across all agencies of government by 34%.
