Top Democrats on Homeland Security Panels Back Hillary Clinton’s Plan to Protect U.S. From Terrorist Threats

NEW YORK—(ENEWSPF)—December 16, 2015. The top Democrats on the House and Senate Homeland Security Committees – Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) – on Wednesday both endorsed Hillary Clinton’s plan to bolster homeland security. In remarks yesterday on the campus at the University of Minnesota, Clinton laid out a “360-degree strategy to keep America safe”– a plan for protecting the homeland from terrorist threats, including domestic radicalization. Her plan would seek to counter terrorists from every angle and stop every step in the process that could lead to another San Bernardino-type incident, from recruitment to training to planning attacks.

Her homeland security plan is just one element of the three-pronged strategy that she laid out at the Council for Foreign Relations last month for defeating ISIS and combating terrorism globally.

“Our candidates for president must demonstrate that they are prepared to protect our nation from threats like homegrown terrorism. Yesterday, Secretary Clinton did just that,” said Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), the Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. “In her speech, she laid out the right and responsible approach to combating the greatest threats to our homeland, including online self-radicalization, and proposed examining our visa programs to root out any potential weaknesses – something our committee has been doing in the wake of the Paris and San Bernardino attacks. As the nature of the threat continues to evolve, we need a leader like Secretary Clinton who knows what to do to keep Americans safe while upholding the values and principles we stand for as a nation. I am as confident as ever in her ability to take on these challenges as our next Commander-in-Chief.”

Clinton outlined a strategy that counters each step in the process of a potential terrorist attack on the homeland. She called for: redoubling efforts to shut down ISIS recruitment in the United States, especially by denying them virtual territory; cracking down on would-be jihadists from getting training overseas, and stopping foreign terrorists from coming here, in part by strengthening visa security; ensuring we can better discover and disrupt plots before they can be carried out; supporting law enforcement officers who risk their lives to prevent and respond to attacks; and empowering Muslim-American communities on the front-lines of the fight against radicalization.

“I want to commend Secretary Clinton for outlining her thoughtful and common-sense strategy for keeping Americans safe and fighting homegrown terrorism,” Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security said. “Although the threat from ISIL and those who may be radicalized by it is real, we must respond with vigilance and not fear. Secretary Clinton’s detailed strategy is a strengthening of the hard work we have done to fight radicalization and terrorism both at home and across the globe. I thank her for her commitment to preserving American values as we continue this effort – doing so is critical to our success.”
