Moscow, Russia–(ENEWSPF)–March 29, 2010. Two female suicide bombers set off explosions in two subway stations in central Moscow during Monday morning’s rush hour killing at least 38 people and injuring more than 60 people.
According to Alexander Bortnikov of the Russian Federal Security Service, findings from the preliminary assessment show that “this act of terror was committed by a terrorist group from the North Caucasus region.”
Chechen rebels, who are fighting for independence, are believed to be behind the bombings. However, the Chechen rebels have not claimed responsibility for the attack at this time.
Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry said that the first blast occurred at 7:56 a.m. local time at the Lubyanka subway station killing at least 23 people and wounding 18. The Lubyanka station is located near the Kremlin and Federal Security Service headquarters.
Another blast happened about 40 minutes later at Park Kultury station, on the same train line. The ministry reported 12 dead in the second explosion with more than 20 injuries.
Russian officials have declared Tuesday as a day of mourning for the victims.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said those responsible for the Moscow subway attacks “will be destroyed.”
President Obama has condemned the “outrageous act” and passed along his condolences. “The American people stand united with the people of Russia in opposition to violent extremism and heinous terrorists attacks that demonstrate such disregard for human life,” said President Obama.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he was “appalled” by the incident and also sent condolences to Russian leaders.
