Two Strong Earthquakes Strike Northwest Iran Killing at Least 50 People


DUBAI—(ENEWSPF)—August 11, 2012. UPDATED 4:00 PM CDT.

The U.S. Geological Survey has reported that two strong earthquakes struck northwest Iran on Saturday.  At least 180 people have been killed and more than 1,300 are injured. Officials fear the casualties could rise.

The first quake measured 6.4 magnitude and struck 37 miles northeast of Tabriz.  A second quake measuring 6.3 struck 30 miles northeast near the town of Varzgan about 11 minutes after the first quake.  At leat10 aftershocks have occurred.

A local official has reported that six villages have been destroyed with sixty villages being 60 to 70 percent destroyed.
