UN Secretary General Ban Strongly Condemns ‘Appalling’ Terrorist Attack Near Iranian Embassy in Beirut


NEW YORK–(ENEWSPF)–19 November 2013 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has strongly condemned the terrorist bombing near the Iranian embassy in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, today which killed at least 23 civilians, including reportedly one Iranian diplomat, and injured over 100 others.

“The Secretary-General calls on all in Lebanon to recognize that such appalling and indiscriminate acts of violence target all in Lebanon,” said a statement issued by his spokesperson.

“He urges all Lebanese parties to act with restraint and to support the institutions of the state, and particularly the security forces, as they seek to prevent further acts of terrorism.”

Mr. Ban extended his condolences to the families of those killed in the attack, which occurred in the Bir Hassan neighbourhood, as well as to the Governments of Lebanon and of Iran.

“The Secretary-General hopes that those responsible for this attack will be brought to justice expeditiously. He reiterates the determination of the international community to support Lebanon’s security and stability,” said the statement.
