Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report for Week Ending Dec. 6, 2014

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending December 6, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 294,000, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 297,000. The 4-week moving average was 299,250, an increase of 250 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 299,000.

There were no special factors impacting this week’s initial claims.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending November 29, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending November 29 was 2,514,000, an increase of 142,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised up 10,000 from 2,362,000 to 2,372,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,385,500, an increase of 27,750 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 2,500 from 2,355,250 to 2,357,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 388,258 in the week ending December 6, an increase of 93,834 (or 31.9 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 97,745 (or 33.2 percent) from the previous week. There were 463,413 initial claims in the comparable week in 2013. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the week ending November 29, an increase of 0.3 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,509,255, an increase of 407,300 (or 19.4 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 265,710 (or 12.6 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,970,677.

The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending November 22 was 2,153,612, a decrease of 95,846 from the previous week. There were 3,820,947 persons claiming benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2013.

No state was triggered “on” the Extended Benefits program during the week ending November 22.

Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,103 in the week ending November 29, a decrease of 825 from the prior week. There were 1,107 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 536 from the preceding week.

There were 15,665 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending November 22, a decrease of 1,352 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,569, a decrease of 2,077 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending November 22 were in Alaska (4.0), Puerto Rico (3.1), New Jersey (2.8), Connecticut (2.4), Montana (2.4), Nevada (2.4), the Virgin Islands (2.3), Massachusetts (2.2), Pennsylvania (2.2), California (2.1), and Oregon (2.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending November 29 were in New York (+2,979), Wisconsin (+2,293), Arkansas (+484), Vermont (+417), and Kentucky (+145), while the largest decreases were in California (-13,819), Texas (-6,313), Ohio (-4,284), Pennsylvania (-4,199), and Illinois (-3,359).
