Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report for Week Ending December 5, 2015

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending December 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 282,000, an increase of 13,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 269,000. The 4-week moving average was 270,750, an increase of 1,500 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 269,250.

There were no special factors impacting this week’s initial claims.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent for the week ending November 28, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending November 28 was 2,243,000, an increase of 82,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 2,161,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,183,000, an increase of 16,500 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 2,166,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 384,481 in the week ending December 5, an increase of 121,853 (or 46.4 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 103,867 (or 39.5 percent) from the previous week. There were 389,284 initial claims in the comparable week in 2014.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending November 28, an increase of 0.3 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,296,957, an increase of 405,760 (or 21.5 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 322,044 (or 17.0 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,515,910.

The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending November 21 was 1,934,596, a decrease of 124,632 from the previous week. There were 2,153,656 persons claiming benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2014.

No state was triggered ” on” the Extended Benefits program during the week ending November 21.

Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 955 in the week ending November 28, a decrease of 805 from the prior week. There were 769 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 489 from the preceding week.

There were 12,824 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending November 21, a decrease of 1,676 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,834, a decrease of 1,774 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending November 21 were in Alaska (4.0), Puerto Rico (3.0), New Jersey (2.4), Pennsylvania (2.2), Montana (2.1), Nevada (2.1), West Virginia (2.1), Connecticut (2.0), the Virgin Islands (2.0), Massachusetts (1.9), and Wyoming (1.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending November 28 were in Wisconsin (+4,677), Ohio (+2,212), Kentucky (+1,953), Kansas (+638), and Arkansas (+612), while the largest decreases were in California (-20,308), Texas (-7,225), New York (-3,042), Florida (-2,898), and Oregon (-2,432).
