In the week ending Feb. 12, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 410,000, an increase of 25,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 385,000. The 4-week moving average was 417,750, an increase of 1,750 from the previous week’s revised average of 416,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.1 percent for the week ending Feb. 5, unchanged from the prior week’s unrevised rate of 3.1 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Feb.5 was 3,911,000, an increase of 1,000 from the preceding week’s revised level of 3,910,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,941,500, an increase of 3,500 from the preceding week’s revised average of 3,938,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 421,713 in the week ending Feb. 12, a decrease of 19,271 from the previous week. There were 478,235 initial claims in the comparable week in 2010.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.6 percent during the week ending Feb. 5, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 4,544,310, a decrease of 62,137 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 4.3 percent and the volume was 5,597,688.
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending Jan. 29 was 9,250,156.
Extended benefits were available in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, during the week ending Jan. 29.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,198 in the week ending Feb. 5, a decrease of 216 from the prior week. There were 2,584 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 7 from the preceding week.
There were 48,828 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 29, an increase of 224 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 40,614, a decrease of 1,290 from the prior week.
States reported 3,629,604 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending Jan. 29, a decrease of 127,386 from the prior week. There were 5,795,648 claimants in the comparable week in 2010. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 29 were in Alaska (6.9 percent), Pennsylvania (5.6), Montana (5.5), Idaho (5.4), Oregon (5.1), Wisconsin (5.1), Puerto Rico (5.0), Rhode Island (4.9), Connecticut (4.8), New Jersey (4.8), and Illinois (4.7).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 5 were in Michigan (+2,693), North Carolina (+1,222), New Jersey (+877), Maryland (+527), and Pennsylvania (+475), while the largest decreases were in Florida (-4,542), Texas (-3,657), South Carolina (-2,780), Tennessee (-2,535), and Georgia (-1,784).
