Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report for Week Ending July 11, 2015

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 11, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 281,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised down by 1,000 from 297,000 to 296,000. The 4-week moving average was 282,500, an increase of 3,250 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised down by 250 from 279,500 to 279,250. There were no special factors impacting this week’s initial claims.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent for the week ending July 4, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 4 was 2,215,000, a decrease of 112,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised down by 7,000 from 2,334,000 to 2,327,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,264,000, a decrease of 2,500 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised down by 1,750 from 2,268,250 to 2,266,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 344,002 in the week ending July 11, an increase of 40,416 (or 13.3 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 59,887 (or 19.7 percent) from the previous week. There were 370,559 initial claims in the comparable week in 2014. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending July 4, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,232,518, an increase of 94,168 (or 4.4 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 207,087 (or 9.7 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,558,065.

The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending June 27 was 2,181,870, an increase of 33,570 from the previous week. There were 2,447,289 persons claiming benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2014.

No state was triggered “on” the Extended Benefits program during the week ending June 27.

Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,066 in the week ending July 4, an increase of 187 from the prior week. There were 1,413 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 104 from the preceding week.

There were 9,509 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 27, a decrease of 223 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,021, an increase of 195 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 27 were in Puerto Rico (3.5), Connecticut (2.6), New Jersey (2.6), Alaska (2.5), Pennsylvania (2.5), California (2.4), Nevada (2.2), West Virginia (2.2), Rhode Island (2.1), and Arkansas (2.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 4 were in Michigan (+9,961), New York (+6,488), California (+5,714), Ohio (+3,190), and Missouri (+2,661), while the largest decreases were in New Jersey (-3,276), Texas (-2,405), Connecticut (-2,180), Maryland (-1,304), and South Carolina (-905).
