In the week ending November 29, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 297,000, a decrease of 17,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised up by 1,000 from 313,000 to 314,000. The 4-week moving average was 299,000, an increase of 4,750 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 250 from 294,000 to 294,250.
There were no special factors impacting this week’s initial claims.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending November 22, unchanged from the previous week’s revised rate. The previous week’s rate was revised up by 0.1 from 1.7 to 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending November 22 was 2,362,000, an increase of 39,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised up 7,000 from 2,316,000 to 2,323,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,355,250, an increase of 1,500 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 1,750 from 2,352,000 to 2,353,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 294,185 in the week ending November 29, a decrease of 62,943 (or -17.6 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 46,132 (or -12.9 percent) from the previous week. There were 321,896 initial claims in the comparable week in 2013.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending November 22, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,092,758, a decrease of 99,911 (or -4.6 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 134,719 (or -6.1 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,506,700.
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending November 15 was 2,249,458, an increase of 128,753 from the previous week. There were 4,112,807 persons claiming benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2013.
No state was triggered “on” the Extended Benefits program during the week ending November 15. Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,928 in the week ending November 22, an increase of 513 from the prior week. There were 1,651 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 178 from the preceding week.
There were 17,017 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending November 15, an increase of 1,437 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 25,646, an increase of 508 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending November 15 were in Alaska (4.2), Puerto Rico (3.4), the Virgin Islands (3.1), New Jersey (2.9), California (2.5), Connecticut (2.4), Nevada (2.4), Montana (2.3), Pennsylvania (2.3), and Massachusetts (2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending November 22 were in California (+19,173), Pennsylvania (+8,213), Ohio (+7,117), Illinois (+4,283), and Wisconsin (+3,262), while the largest decreases were in Montana (-1,182), Colorado (-622), Wyoming (-291), South Carolina (-237), and District of Columbia (-7).
