In the week ending November 7, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 276,000, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised level. The 4-week moving average was 267,750, an increase of 5,000 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 262,750.
There were no special factors impacting this week’s initial claims.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent for the week ending October 31, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending October 31 was 2,174,000, an increase of 5,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised up 6,000 from 2,163,000 to 2,169,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,165,250, an increase of 2,250 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 1,500 from 2,161,500 to 2,163,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 290,468 in the week ending November 7, an increase of 32,178 (or 12.5 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 32,286 (or 12.5 percent) from the previous week. There were 309,338 initial claims in the comparable week in 2014.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4 percent during the week ending October 31, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,897,503, an increase of 23,901 (or 1.3 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 19,517 (or 1.0 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 2,116,640.
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending October 24 was 1,925,834, an increase of 13,565 from the previous week. There were 2,101,931 persons claiming benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2014.
No state was triggered “on” the Extended Benefits program during the week ending October 24.
Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,204 in the week ending October 31, a decrease of 86 from the prior week. There were 1,201 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 108 from the preceding week.
There were 13,948 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending October 24, a decrease of 485 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,698, an increase of 215 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending October 24 were in Puerto Rico (3.3), Alaska (3.1), the Virgin Islands (2.9), New Jersey (2.3), California (2.1), Connecticut (2.0), Nevada (2.0), Pennsylvania (2.0), West Virginia (1.9), and Illinois (1.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending October 31 were in Michigan (+3,942), California (+2,150), Illinois (+1,796), Wisconsin (+1,544), and Ohio (+1,198), while the largest decreases were in New York (-777), South Carolina (-571), Idaho (-372), Georgia (-365), and Tennessee (-316).
