In the week ending November 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 269,000, an increase of 9,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 260,000. The 4-week moving average was 269,250, a decrease of 1,750 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 271,000.
There were no special factors impacting this week’s initial claims.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent for the week ending November 21, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending November 21 was 2,161,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised down by 52,000 from 2,207,000 to 2,155,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,166,500, a decrease of 2,250 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised down by 13,000 from 2,181,750 to 2,168,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 262,796 in the week ending November 28, a decrease of 42,628 (or -14.0 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 51,727 (or -16.9 percent) from the previous week. There were 294,389 initial claims in the comparable week in 2014.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4 percent during the week ending November 21, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,890,645, a decrease of 115,346 (or -5.8 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 120,661 (or -6.0 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 2,102,005.
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending November 14 was 2,059,190, an increase of 104,122 from the previous week. There were 2,250,448 persons claiming benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2014.
No state was triggered “on” the Extended Benefits program during the week ending November 14.
Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,760 in the week ending November 21, an increase of 503 from the prior week. There were 1,258 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 166 from the preceding week.
There were 14,499 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending November 14, an increase of 1,353 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,605, an increase of 568 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending November 14 were in Alaska (4.0), Puerto Rico (3.1), New Jersey (2.5), California (2.2), Pennsylvania (2.2), West Virginia (2.2), Connecticut (2.1), Montana (2.1), the Virgin Islands (2.1), Nevada (2.0), and Wyoming (2.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending November 21 were in California (+7,941), Illinois (+3,617), Minnesota (+2,612), Iowa (+2,064), and Wisconsin (+1,994), while the largest decreases were in Louisiana (-792), Rhode Island (-207), Delaware (-73), Nevada (-48), and Puerto Rico (-23).
