In the week ending November 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 290,000, an increase of 12,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 278,000. The 4-week moving average was 285,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 279,000.
There were no special factors impacting this week’s initial claims.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending November 1, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending November 1 was 2,392,000, an increase of 36,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised up 8,000 from 2,348,000 to 2,356,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,372,500, an increase of 750 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 2,000 from 2,369,750 to 2,371,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 306,889 in the week ending November 8, an increase of 39,968 (or 15.0 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 27,277 (or 10.2 percent) from the previous week. There were 364,167 initial claims in the comparable week in 2013.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending November 1, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,107,261, an increase of 61,824 (or 3.0 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 30,634 (or 1.5 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,510,618.
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending October 25 was 2,101,931, a decrease of 36,654 from the previous week. There were 3,919,373 persons claiming benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2013.
No state was triggered “on” the Extended Benefits program during the week ending October 25.
Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,326 in the week ending November 1, a decrease of 273 from the prior week. There were 1,777 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 33 from the preceding week. There were 15,684 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending October 25, a decrease of 787 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 25,712, a decrease of 163 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending October 25 were in Puerto Rico (3.5), Alaska (3.2), Virgin Islands (3.1), New Jersey (2.8), Connecticut (2.4), California (2.3), Nevada (2.2), Massachusetts (2.1), Pennsylvania (2.1), and Oregon (2.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending November 1 were in Michigan (+1,921), New Jersey (+1,006), Pennsylvania (+898), Arkansas (+853), and Wisconsin (+685), while the largest decreases were in California (-3,850), Ohio (-2,325), Oregon (-931), Tennessee (-816), and New York (-746).
