United Steel Workers to Rally in Support of Striking Palermo Workers

PITTSBURGH–(ENEWSPF)–August 23, 2012.  The United Steelworkers (USW) announces a rally at Costco in The Waterfront on Saturday, August 25 to support striking workers at Palermo’s Pizza in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  The ongoing strike at the frozen pizza factory started in June when workers walked out seeking recognition for their union in the face of unsafe conditions and worker intimidation.

The USW and allies are asking Costco to enforce its supplier code of conduct and drop Palermo’s Pizza until it allows striking workers to hold a free and fair union election.  Joining the Palermo Workers’ Union, the AFL-CIO, and Voces de la Frontera (a Wisconsin immigrant rights and workers’ center), the USW is calling for a national boycott of Palermo’s Pizza products.  The Pittsburgh rally is part of a broader national day of action.   Demonstrations are planned in more than 40 cities across the country.

Costco, the company’s largest customer, sells Palermo’s frozen pizza under its in-house Kirkland brand.  Since August 11, the coalition has organized actions at Costco stores in fifteen cities nationwide.

Participants will meet at the entrance to the Costco parking lot in West Homestead, PA at 12 p.m.

The USW represents about 850,000 working men and women in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean  in a wide variety of industries, ranging from glassmaking to mining, paper, steel, tires and rubber to the public sector, education, clerical, service workers and health care industries.
