US Department of State Statement on North Korea, Nov. 24, 2010

Beijing, China–(ENEWSPF)–November 24, 2010.  The following statement is attributed to Stephen W. Bosworth, State Department Special Representative for North Korea Policy:

The United States stands in solidarity with our South Korean allies and the international community in condemnation of North Korea’s artillery attack against the island of Yeongpyong on November 23. The United States calls upon the DPRK to cease its provocative and irresponsible actions against its neighbors, fully abide by the terms of the Armistice, and adhere to its international obligations.

We call on all members of the international community to condemn the DPRK’s acts and to make clear that they expect the DPRK to cease all provocations and implement its denuclearization commitments.

We offer our sincere condolences to the South Korean people, particularly the victims and their families.

The United States remains firmly committed to the defense of the Republic of Korea and to the maintenance of peace and stability in Northeast Asia.
