West Virginia Coal Mine Collapses


WEST VIRGINIA–(ENEWSPF)–April 5, 2010.  The roof of the Upper Big Branch Mine collapsed at approximately 4:30 p.m. (local time) today.  State officials have confirmed that 6 miners are dead and 21 people unaccounted for.  Twenty-one people were hurt in the blast.

Raleigh County officials said that at least 20 ambulances and three helicopters have been dispatched to the scene.

The West Virginia mine is located in Whitesville which is approximately 30 miles south of Charleston, West Virginia.

The mine is owned by a unit of Massey Energy Company which has operations in West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia and is the largest coal producer in Central Appalachia.
