Congresswoman Duckworth’s Statement on the Distinguished Warfare Medal

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–April 16, 2013.  The Pentagon has announced that Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has cancelled the creation of the Distinguished Warfare Medal. On March 1, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth signed onto a bipartisan letter asking that Secretary Hagel reconsider placing the proposed Distinguished Warfare Medal above the Purple Heart and Bronze Star in order of precedence.

“I am pleased that Secretary Hagel has listened to the views of Members of Congress and Veterans throughout this country by reviewing the creation of the Distinguished Warfare Medal (DWM),” said Duckworth. “I applaud Secretary Hagel for instead creating a distinguishing device that may be affixed to existing medals and honor the service of cyber operators. It is important that the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, which honor those members of our Armed forces who serve in direct combat, continue to be given the highest level of precedence .”
