Durbin Announces Over $315,000 in HUD Grants to Reduce Homelessness Among Illinois Veterans

WASHINGTON, D.C.–(ENEWSPF)–December 16, 2011. Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL) announced yesterday that three Illinois communities will receive a total of $315,179 in Department of Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) grant funding to help homeless veterans find shelter as they receive health and other services.

“Last night, in Illinois alone, more than 1,000 homeless veterans were on the street,” said Durbin. “This country can do better—and must do better—for the brave men and women who have served our nation honorably. Today’s funding makes a statement to our veterans that their country will help them find housing and the health services they need and deserve.”

The HUD-VASH program provides funding to public housing agencies who have agreed to partner with VA medical facilities. The program combines Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance for homeless veterans with case management and clinical services provided by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA). VA provides these services for participating veterans at VA medical centers (VAMCs) and community-based outreach clinics.

Under this announcement, the following communities will receive funding:

  • Quad Cities: $49,535 in funding to the Greater Metro Area Housing Authority of Rock Island County
  • Peoria: $139,038 in funding to the Peoria Housing Authority
  • Rockford: $126,606 in funding to the Rockford Housing Authority
