Sierra Club ‘9/11 Veterans Climbing Series”’

Makes Three Summit Attempts Across America on September 11th

SAN FRANCISCO–(ENEWSPF)–September 10, 2012 – Sierra Club Mission Outdoors, in partnership with Veterans Expeditions, Paradox Sports, and Big City Mountaineers, will lead 24 military veterans up three different peaks across the country. Part of the ongoing Veterans Climbing Series the Sierra Club first sponsored last year, the four organizations will concurrently guide teams up the Grand Tetons (Wyoming), Mt. Shuksan (Washington) and Mt. Washington (New Hampshire).

“These climbs are an opportunity to spend time outdoors, celebrate our public lands and honor those who risk their lives defending our country,” said OIF veteran and Sierra Club Mission Outdoors Director Stacy Bare. “An outlet for the warrior spirit, we look forward to planning numerous climbs year-round that allow all Americans to experience the wonders of the great outdoors.”

Mission Outdoor and Veterans Expeditions will lead the climbs in New Hampshire and Washington, together with Big City Mountineers (BCM). Climbing through BCM’s Summit for Someone program, each climber also took on the challenge of raising funds to send under-resourced urban youth on wilderness expeditions with Veterans as mentors. Paradox Sports will lead the climb up the Grand Tetons.

The first 9/11 climb was held in 2010, when Veterans Expeditions led 11 veterans to the top of Longs Peak (Colorado). Last year, Mission Outdoors and Veterans Expeditions partnered with Jackson Hole Mountain Guides to summit the Grand Teton.

“This monumental climb of the Grand Teton is a symbol of remembering that tragic day, what it represents, and, more importantly, moving on,” said mountain guide and former Army Ranger Mike Kirby.

Sierra Club’s Mission Outdoors is committed to creating opportunities for those who served our country and their families to experience the freedom of the land they defended. Time spent outside is advantageous to veterans healing and reintegrating at home; veterans will also rediscover the beauty of our country’s open spaces and wild places.
