U.S. Northern Command Continues in Aftermath of Irene


PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.–(ENEWSPF)–August 29, 2011.  U.S. Northern Command is coordinating Department of Defense’s support to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, state and local response efforts in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene.

The following is a list of DoD assets and personnel that are part of USNORTHCOM’s support efforts to the Lead Agency:

New Operations:

  • Air Operations Group support to Region II – Group consists of air and space power subject matter experts to help synchronize air operations with Army, Navy, Air-Force, and National Guard aviation resources in support of FEMA Air Operations.

On-going Operations:

  • USNORTHCOM designated Fort A.P. Hill as a FEMA Federal Teams Staging Facility (FTSF) in support of disaster operations in response to Tropical Storm Irene in the State of VA. 
  • USNORTHCOM provided aircraft for Federal Operations support to assist in transporting key personnel and supplies in support of disaster operations in response to Tropical Storm Irene in the State of North Carolina.  
  • USNORTHCOM activated the Defense Coordinating Officer and Defense Coordinating Element from U.S. Army North in support of the FEMA Region III (Virginia). 
  • USNORTHCOM designated Westover Air Reserve Base, MA., as an Incident Support Base to stage asset movement to impacted counties in North Carolina and South Carolina.  
  • USNORTHCOM designated Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., as an Incident Support Base to stage asset movement to impacted counties in Region II and III.  
  • USNORTHCOM activated the Defense Coordinating Officer and Defense Coordinating Element from Region IX U.S. Army North in support of the FEMA Region I RRCC. 
  • USNORTHCOM is also providing FEMA with pararescue and 18 rotary wing aircraft in anticipation of search and rescue operations for Tropical Storm Irene response.  
  • USNORTHCOM activated the Defense Coordinating Officer and Defense Coordinating Element from U.S. Army North in support of the FEMA Region I. (Regional Response Coordination Center).  
  • USNORTHCOM activated the Defense Coordinating Officer and Defense Coordinating Element from U.S. Army North in support of the FEMA Region II. (New Jersey/New York).  
  • USNORTHCOM designated Westover Air Reserve Base, Mass., as an Incident Support Base to stage asset movement to impacted counties. 
  • USNORTHCOM activated the Defense Coordinating Officer and Defense Coordinating Element from U.S. Army North in support of the FEMA Region II (Puerto Rico).  
  • USNORTHCOM activated the Defense Coordinating Officer and Defense Coordinating Element from U.S. Army North in support of FEMA Region IV (North Carolina).  
  • USNORTHCOM activated the Defense Coordinating Officer and Defense Coordinating Element from U.S. Army North in support of the FEMA National Response Coordination Center to provide assessments and coordination as required.  
  • USNORTHCOM activated Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officers to support the FEMA National Response Coordination Center.  
  • USNORTHCOM activated and deployed transportation specialists to the FEMA Movement Coordination Center to augment and assist in strategic-level movement and logistics planning.  
  • USNORTHCOM designated Fort Bragg, N.C., as an Incident Support Base to stage asset movement to impacted counties in North Carolina and South Carolina.
