Buffalo, New York–(ENEWSPF)–August 24, 2010 – Zemco Industries, a Buffalo, New York, deli meats operation owned by Tyson Foods, is voluntarily recalling approximately 380,000 pounds of supermarket deli roast beef and ham that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall was initiated after a sample of roast beef analyzed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture was found to contain the bacteria.
To date, there have been no illnesses reported or associated with any of the affected products. However, Zemco is conducting the voluntary recall as a precautionary measure. It is believed that most of the affected products, which were produced between June 18 and July 2, have already been consumed.
Only one company, Walmart, received the recalled deli meats. The company has been contacted and has instructed its stores to remove the products from shelves and is destroying any remaining products still in its possession.
The recall does not involve any individual retail packages of deli meat and also does not include any meat purchased at the deli counter, but does include roast beef and ham used in four types of half and whole Marketside Grab and Go deli sandwiches. This includes Marketside Ham and Swiss Sandwiches, Italian Hero Sandwiches, Roast Beef and Cheddar Sandwiches, and Smokehouse Hero Sandwiches.
The meat products included in the recall contain ingredients that inhibit the growth of Listeria monocytogenes.
A thorough review of operations at the Buffalo plant has been conducted to ensure all food safety protocols are being followed and that meat produced there is safe for consumption.
