Illinois Establishment Recalls Uninspected Tamales

SPRINGFIELD, Ill.–(ENEWSPF)–September 14, 2012.  A Chicago food company has voluntarily recalled 2,970 pounds of tamales.  Meca Foods, the manufacturer of La Tia Tamales, issued the recall because the product was produced in a facility that is not state inspected.

The Class I, or high risk, recall includes 13,500 items.  Their labels read:  Home Style Tamales – Green Pork; Home Style Tamales – Red Pork; and Home Style Tamales – Chicken.

The tamales were produced between April 2011 and September 2012 and bear the establishment number “EST. 699” inside the Illinois mark of inspection.  However, this number does not belong to the firm.

The product was sold to brokers and restaurants in Chicago.  The Illinois Department of Agriculture has received no reports of illness due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned they may have contracted a food-borne illness should contact a health care provider.

For more information about the recall, call Meca Foods, 6425 W. 63rd Street, at (773) 229-2281 or the Illinois Department of Agriculture at (217) 782-6684.
