Silver Spring, Maryland–(ENEWSPF)–March 23, 2011. Lakeside Foods, Inc. of Manitowoc, Wisconsin is initiating a voluntary recall of 3000 cases of 105-ounce canned pickled sliced beets because some cans may have been under processed. While no illnesses have been reported, these cans have the potential to be contaminated with harmful organisms including Clostridium botulinum. Botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distention and constipation may also be common symptoms. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention. Consumers also are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.
Lakeside is asking consumers who have cans of the Pickled Sliced Beets with the following code on the can to return them unopened to the place of purchase: EFBB229/003034 and EFBB229/003047.
The product was distributed in the following states AL, FL, GA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN and WI. The product was sold with the followmg labels: BOUNTIFUL HARVEST, CODE ELITE, COMSOURCE MEDAL, LAKESIDE, MONARCH, NUGGET BLACK, RESTAURANT PRIDE and SYSCO CLASSIC.
No other Lakeside products are affected by this recall. Lakeside said that this recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the Food & Drug Administration and has identified and corrected the condition that resulted in its decision to voluntarily recall the cans in question. The recall information has been communicated to Lakeside’s distributor customers and they will be working with them to contact end users directly.
