Kopy’s Kolumn: The Publisher’s Blog for June 11, 2019

Gary Kopycinski, Kopy's Kolumn, here's looking at you

Park Forest, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Took my dogs to our own private dog park after 8 PM. They ran like crazy, I cleaned up after them (that for those reading who know where my private dog park is), and left so late because I realized the days are still getting longer.

But that will change in 10 days.

Can’t believe we’re at this point already.

I’m vowing to make the most of the summer, the nice weather, the green, the breezes, even the rain. “…Hath all too short a date,” and all that. Put that in a previous column. It’s on my mind.

So, again, outside begins big time Wednesday in Park Forest with Main Street Nights. Remember, it’s Resident Appreciation Month. The big Resident Appreciation BBQ Celebration and Main Street Nights Kick-off, On the Green, 349 Main Street (behind Village Hall).

Outside is where it’s at.

Received an image/poster from Ms. Sasha Brown on behalf of Impact Christian Center, a church, which is hosting a “Meet the Neighbors” event at Algonquin School, 170 Algonquin Street, Park Forest, on Saturday, June 15, beginning at 1:00 PM. There will be music, a health fair, and a “bouncy house.”

“We are here for you! Come meet us!” they say in their flyer.

Be Cautious of Door-to-door Solicitors

Village Manager Tom Mick spoke of this at the last Village Board meeting, but I only saw the extended statement from the Village on the website today.

Published that. Please be cautious. Recalling police reports past, the door-to-door solicitors who are up to no good tend to target our older population.

The end of the statement bears repeating:

Should any vendor come to your door and act in an improper way, please call the police immediately. Any individual stating that they are authorized by the Village to enter your home for any purpose should be verified by police first also. Residents with questions can call the Village Manager’s Office at 708-748-1129.

Resale Shop Opens in Downtown Park Forest

Bang 4 Ur Buck Resale Opens DownTown

From Monica DeLord’s Park Forest eBulletin. (Just pointing out, we were “eNews Park Forest” in 2006, long before anyone else in town started putting the tiny “e” in front of words. Take that for what it is: a parenthetical expression.)

Here’s the news from Monica:

We sell electronics, furniture, appliances, clothes, and shoes.

They accept gently used or new clothing, shoes, accessories such as belts, hats, purses, jewelry and more!

Great deals everyday!  Stop by and check them out!!

They are located at 310 Main Street in DownTown Park Forest. (708) 275-3652.

By the way, former Trustee Ken Kramer would be very proud to see that Monica spelled “DownTown Park Forest” with a capital “D” and capital “T”. He always requested that I make that edit when he used to proofread police reports for this publication.

Some more specifics from their flyer:

BANG 4 ur BUCK RESALE SHOP is park forest’s newest place to find bargains for the whole family and is a great place to donate your unwanted items. We accept gently used or new clothing, shoes, accessories such as belts. Hats, purses, and jewelry. We also accept suitcases, home decor. Furniture, and vintage items. You may drop off your donations at our shop during store hours. A tax-deductible receipt will be provided upon request. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

They also have Android and iPhone chargers available, 1 for $5.00, 2 for $8.00, according to their flyer.

Called to the Principal’s Office

Finally, I have a long-overdue meeting on Tuesday, today, with Dr. Albert Brass Jr., Principal of Rich East High School. I look forward to chatting with him, learning all I can about Rich East all over again. Will ask for names, email addresses, for teachers and coaches, those that might change over the summer.

Most of all, I look forward to telling you about Dr. Brass and his enthusiasm for Rich East High School.

In one of my classic moves, I showed up a week early for this meeting, last Tuesday, at 2:00 PM sharp.

Ask Tom Mick sometime about that 8:00 AM call I made to him on a spring Saturday morning some years ago when I was a village trustee. Our phone conversation went something like this:

“Tom, where is everyone?” I was by the flags on the Village Green.

“Gary, what are you talking about?” he said, or words to that effect.

“The baseball parade. The Park Forest Little League kick-off parade!”

“Gary, that’s next week.”

At that point, I pulled my best Emily Litella from the original Saturday Night Live.

Until next time, enjoy what promises to be a spectacular Tuesday in Park Forest.

Have news for this column? Please send it to [email protected]. Also, I’m looking for people to interview. Great Park Foresters. Could be anyone. Greatness is subjective. Have a friend or neighbor who stands out? Talk to me! 708-808-0204.
