ACLU: Key House Committee to Consider NSA Overhaul Bill

WASHINGTON–(ENEWSPF)–May 5, 2014.  The House Judiciary Committee will vote on Wednesday on a revised version of the USA Freedom Act, a bipartisan bill designed to rein in the NSA’s surveillance programs. The ACLU voiced strong support for the original version of the bill when it was introduced in October.

Laura W. Murphy, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Washington Legislative Office, had this reaction:

“The mere fact that the Judiciary Committee is taking up this bill now is positive and encouraging. The details still need to be hammered out, but the bill is certainly better than the one that the House Intelligence Committee will be considering this week, which is a non-starter. The American people must insist that Congress vote on real reform, not window-dressing, so that a bill goes to the president’s desk to prevent the government from spying on every American.”
