Center for American Progress Vice President of Energy Policy Greg Dotson issued the following statement today in reaction to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that upheld the “Greenhouse Gas Cases” that addressed the EPA’s authority to regulate carbon pollution from major stationary sources:
Today’s Supreme Court decision removes any remaining doubt that the EPA has authority to regulate carbon pollution under the Clean Air Act. The opinion leaves in place the EPA’s common-sense approach to regulating new major sources of air pollution. And it shows the EPA that there is a straightforward way to avoid regulating small and disparate sources of pollution. Even more importantly, today’s ruling leaves untouched the EPA’s authority to address carbon pollution from existing power plants, which are the biggest source of unregulated carbon pollution in the country. Seven of the nine Supreme Court justices have signed on to opinions concluding that the EPA can regulate carbon pollution under the Clean Air Act. This is good news for public health, the environment, and future generations.
